Behavioral Health

HPN specializes in neuropsychological assessments for a variety of neurological conditions but especially for the geriatric, or Kupuna population, where the main referral question concerns memory loss. Neuropsychological dementia assessments typically include assessment of all cognitive domains (i.e., memory, attention, visuospatial, language, and executive function).  Because mood disorders (e.g., depression or anxiety) are common among seniors, mood is assessed to rule out disorders such as “pseudo dementia.”  Mood disorders can also co-occur with dementia, and it is important for families to understand to what extent mood may be affecting a loved one’s cognition.   The neuropsychological assessment is also utilized to stage the level of cognition for the treatment team (e.g. senior moments, mild cognitive impairment, or early, moderate, and late stages of dementia).  Knowing the level of cognition allows appropriate therapeutic interventions to be recommended and provided.  Part of this process involves the family- where the primary caregiver completes questionnaires that address a patient’s abilities at home.
